Definition
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your content the direct answer a search engine or AI assistant gives, rather than one link in a list. The name grew up around featured snippets and voice assistants. Today it is used for the same work as GEO, LLMO and AI SEO.
Is answer engine optimization different from GEO, LLMO and AI SEO?
Answer engine optimization is not meaningfully different from GEO, LLMO or AI SEO. No standards body defines any of the four terms, and vendors draw the lines between them differently. The goal is the same in each case: be the source the answer comes from.
| Name | Stands for | Where you mostly see it |
|---|---|---|
| AI SEO | Search engine optimisation for AI search | Practitioners and agencies |
| GEO | Generative engine optimization | The 2023 research paper that coined it, and vendors since |
| AEO | Answer engine optimization | The featured snippet and voice assistant era, now AI search |
| LLMO | Large language model optimization | Vendor glossaries |
The label matters less than the method. Google's documentation says appearing in its AI features needs no additional requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet, which is the same foundation every one of these names rests on.
How does answer engine optimization work?
Answer engine optimization works by putting a complete, quotable answer directly under the question it answers. An engine assembling a reply looks for a passage that settles the question on its own, so a page that opens each section with the answer gives it something to lift.
In practice that means question-style headings, the answer in the first sentence below each one, and facts stated plainly enough to quote. It is the same page structure that has won featured snippets for years.
How do you check whether answer engine optimization is working?
You check answer engine optimization by asking the engines your customers use the questions they ask, then recording who gets named. Run the same set of questions each month so the results are comparable, and note the sources each answer cites.
