Definition
Google AI Mode is a mode of Google Search that answers your question with a generated response and supporting links, instead of a page of ranked results. Google launched it on 5 March 2025 as a United States experiment, and now runs it as its own destination, reachable from Search and the Google app.
Example. You ask a question in AI Mode and get a written answer with a handful of source links beside it, then ask a follow-up in the same thread without starting a new search.
You can test what the assistants say about your own brand with the free AI Visibility Tester.
How do pages appear in Google AI Mode?
Pages appear in AI Mode by being indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Google's documentation is explicit that there are no additional requirements and no special optimisations for AI Overviews or AI Mode. The same snippet controls apply: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex.
AI Mode breaks a question into several searches behind the scenes and assembles one answer from what comes back, which is why a single page rarely carries a whole response. Our query fan-out guide covers that mechanism in depth.
Can you see AI Mode traffic in Search Console?
You can see AI Mode traffic in Search Console, and the common claim that it is invisible is out of date. Google says sites appearing in AI features are included in overall search traffic, reported under the Web search type. Since June 2026 there has also been a dedicated Generative AI performance report covering AI Overviews and AI Mode, rolled out to all sites on 31 August 2026.
| Where to look | What it gives you |
|---|---|
| The normal performance report | AI Mode and AI Overview activity, folded into Web search type totals. Not separable. |
| The Generative AI performance report | AI Overviews and AI Mode on their own, impressions only. No click data. |
| Anywhere else | Nothing official. Any AI Mode click figure from a third party is modelled, not measured. |
The honest position is that you can measure whether you are seen, and you cannot yet measure what that is worth in clicks.
What do people get wrong about AI Mode?
- Assuming a top-ten ranking earns a citation. Being eligible is the requirement Google states. It is not a promise that your page is the one quoted.
- Quoting a model version as a fixed fact. AI Mode launched on a custom version of Gemini 2.0 and the model has moved since. Any page that names a version without a date is already ageing.
- Blocking snippets to protect content.
nosnippetremoves you from the answer, and from the ordinary result snippet with it.
