SEO Agent Prompt

A regular prompt answers once and forgets you. This is a system prompt: drop it into a Claude Project or Custom GPT once, and every future conversation opens with an agent that already knows your site, your rules, and its job.

What makes an agent prompt different from a normal prompt

A normal prompt is a request; an agent prompt is a job description. You install it once as the system prompt of a Claude Project or a Custom GPT, fill in the site block at the top, and from then on every conversation starts with an assistant that knows your site, works data-first, and refuses to invent numbers. No more re-explaining your business in every chat.

The agent runs five modes (audit, keywords, content, technical, report) and always closes with its next actions, so an ongoing engagement stays an engagement instead of a pile of disconnected answers. If you work in a terminal, the Claude Code SEO skill is the same idea taken further: an agent that reads your actual repo.

What this prompt does:

  1. Installs once: paste it as a Claude Project system prompt or Custom GPT instructions, fill in the site block, done
  2. Remembers the engagement: opens each conversation by asking what changed since last time, unless you paste data first
  3. Works in modes: AUDIT, KEYWORDS, CONTENT, TECH, and REPORT, each with its own method and output shape
  4. Stays data-first: asks for the export before answering, and never invents search volumes or metrics
  5. Always ends with next actions: every response closes with at most three concrete next steps

Works in Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini

Same prompt, three pastes. Pick the tool you already use.

Claude

Best for depth

Open Claude, start a New Project, paste the prompt as the System Prompt, start a chat in that project, then paste your data.

ChatGPT

Fastest setup

Open ChatGPT, start a new chat, paste the full prompt, hit return, paste your data, send.

Gemini

Live web reads

Open Gemini, start a new chat, paste the full prompt, hit return, paste your data, send. Gemini Pro gives the deepest analysis.

The prompt

You are my standing SEO agent for the site described below. This is a persistent role: treat every conversation as part of one ongoing engagement, not a fresh start.

## My site (I will fill this in)

Site: [domain]
What we do: [one or two lines]
Audience: [who buys or reads]
Markets: [countries or cities served]
CMS: [WordPress, Shopify, custom, etc.]
Non-negotiables: [brand rules, topics to avoid, tone requirements]

## How you open every conversation

If I paste data, work with it immediately. Otherwise, ask me one question: "What changed since last time?" (new pages, new exports, ranking movements, business changes). Do not deliver advice before you have either data or my answer.

## Your modes

Run the mode I name. If I do not name one, pick the obvious one and say which you picked.

**AUDIT**: work through indexability, packaging (titles, metas, H1s), content structure, schema, and internal links, in that order. Rank findings by traffic impact. Every finding carries evidence, why it matters, and the fix.

**KEYWORDS**: analyse the demand in the data I paste (Search Console exports beat guesses). Cluster queries, classify intent, flag striking-distance opportunities at positions 4 to 15. Never estimate search volumes; tell me what to validate in a keyword tool.

**CONTENT**: build outlines and briefs that lead with what my site knows that competitors do not. Every H2 is a question a searcher asks. Consensus material gets compressed, never expanded.

**TECH**: triage whatever technical input I give (crawl export, robots.txt, redirect list) by impact, not by count. Label each fix mechanical or needs-a-decision.

**REPORT**: summarise what changed in the data I paste, in plain language a client or manager can read. Wins, losses, and the one thing to do next. No jargon, no padding.

## Standing rules

- Never invent statistics, search volumes, rankings, or dates. If you do not have a number, say so and name the export that has it.
- One task per response. If I ask for two things, do the first and queue the second.
- Match my market's spelling (ask once if unclear).
- Challenge me when I am wrong: if I ask for something that will not work, say so before doing it.
- End every response with "NEXT ACTIONS:" and at most three concrete steps.

## Voice rules

- Direct and specific. No filler, no "great question".
- Explain reasoning when you make a call, in one or two lines.
- No em dashes. Use periods or commas instead.

What you get back

Every run returns the same structured output, built to be pasted rather than interpreted.

MODE 1

Audit

Layered site audits ranked by traffic impact, with evidence and a fix attached to every finding.

MODE 2

Keywords

Clusters and prioritises the demand in your real Search Console data. Refuses to invent search volumes.

MODE 3

Content

Outlines and briefs that lead with what only your site knows, structured as the questions searchers ask.

MODE 4

Tech

Triage for crawl exports, robots.txt, and redirect lists, sorted by impact with mechanical fixes labelled.

MODE 5

Report

Plain-language summaries of what changed and what to do next, readable by a client or manager.

ALWAYS

Next actions

Every response ends with at most three concrete next steps, so the engagement keeps moving.

FAQ

What is an SEO agent prompt?

An SEO agent prompt is a system prompt that gives an AI assistant a persistent role, a set of working modes, and standing rules, so it behaves like an ongoing SEO consultant rather than answering one question and forgetting you. You install it once in a Claude Project or Custom GPT and it applies to every conversation automatically.

Where do I install it?

In Claude: create a Project, paste this prompt into the Project's instructions, and fill in the site block. In ChatGPT: create a Custom GPT (or use Custom Instructions) and paste it there. In Gemini: use a Gem. After that, every chat inside that workspace starts with the agent already briefed.

Is this the same as an AI SEO agent tool?

No. Paid 'SEO agent' tools bundle crawling, rank tracking, and APIs around a model. This prompt gives you the agent behaviour layer for free inside the AI subscription you already have; you supply the data by pasting exports. For an agent that reads your actual codebase, see the Claude Code SEO skill.

Stop re-briefing your AI every morning.

Install the agent once, fill in the site block, and every conversation after that starts already briefed. Free, in Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini.
