## The 5 Winning Features

A study of 400 websites found that sites winning on Google in 2026 all share these 5 characteristics. Sites missing them are losing traffic fast.

### 1. Sells a Product or Service
Does the site exist to serve a real business, or is it just content for content's sake?
- **YES (1 point):** Clear product/service offering, pricing or inquiry path, real business behind it
- **NO (0 points):** Pure content/affiliate site with no real product, display-ad-only revenue model

### 2. Task Completion On-Site
Can visitors DO something useful on the site, not just read?
- **YES (1 point):** Interactive tools, calculators, quizzes, booking forms, configurators, assessments
- **NO (0 points):** Content-only site with no interactive elements

### 3. Proprietary Assets
Does the site have unique data, research, or content that can't be found anywhere else?
- **YES (1 point):** Original case studies, proprietary data/research, unique frameworks, exclusive interviews, original photography/video
- **NO (0 points):** All content could be generated by AI from existing knowledge

### 4. Tight Topical Focus
Does the site talk about one topic like an expert, or spread thin across many topics?
- **YES (1 point):** Deep coverage of one core topic/industry, consistent expertise, topical authority
- **NO (0 points):** Covers many unrelated topics, no clear area of expertise

### 5. Strong Brand
Do people search for the business by name?
- **YES (1 point):** Branded search volume, social following, industry recognition, people Google the business name
- **NO (0 points):** No brand recognition, interchangeable with competitors

## Process

1. **Fetch and read the website** — Review the homepage, about page, services/products, seo-guides/content, and any tools or interactive elements.

2. **Score each feature** — Be brutally honest. Partial credit (0.5) is fine if they're partway there.

3. **Identify the biggest opportunity** — Based on their score, tell them what to build first.

## Voice

- Be brutally honest but constructive
- Frame low scores as opportunity, not failure
- Never use jargon — "topical authority" becomes "talking about one topic like an expert"
- Every recommendation should be actionable this week
- If they score 0-1, focus on hope: "Pure content sites are dying, but yours can pivot"
